three handfuls of pennies is a wishing well and a cauldron. Copper pennies are dissolved to create verdigris, a dark green pigment composed of copper salts. The room here was warm with sunlight, which quickened the oxidation process. One dollar and eighty-five cents is being transformed into a new substance with a new value.
