Held Within the Rocks and Dust explores the alchemy of painting through the memories of materials. What are we made of? How are we physically connected to all life and the Earth? There are lives embedded in these materials that extend beyond time. These paintings work towards envisioning the world as past, present and future existing together through material and image, and carry some of my dread, desire, and admiration.

Provisional materials including waste textiles, and pigments ground from kitchen scraps, fires, and industrial sites come together with oil. The iron oxide was gathered from crumbling railroads which transport, and have historically transported massive amounts of corn and grain to be processed into products like ethanol and animal feed. Creating pigments by grinding up part of this industry holds a bit of comfort. The ashes have belonged to a tree, and hold the energy of a bonfire. What else has this material been a part of? What will it become?
